Most of the population of Spain (76.0%) is Catholic, although the percentage of practitioners is less than that. The 20.3% of the population say they don't belong to any religion (defined as atheists or nonbelievers). There are also Islamic minorities, Protestants and Orthodox, whose numbers have increased recently due to immigration (total about 2.1% of the population) and other groups, including Jews, Buddhists, Baha'is, or Mormons, among others.
According to a survey by the CIS in July of 2009, 58.2% of self-defined as believers of any religion says do not go to church or other religious services never or almost never and 17.0% say they go several times a year, while 13.3% say they attend religious services nearly every Sunday and Church services, with 2.0% going twice a week or more.
More than a half of the "non-practicing Catholics" do not believe that Christ was God or son of God, born of a virgin or resurrected the third day (curiously, neither believe 20% of those considered "practitioners"). And more than 60% do not believe in heaven or hell, in miracles, in Adam and Eve in the divine creation of the universe or the soul's survival after death. In addition to a quarter of Catholics (practicing and non practicing) also has faith in astrology and reincarnation (all data Obradoiro de Sociología).
